Big Data in the Global Economy

22 - 23 June 2026

The rapid expansion of data availability is transforming how economists study globalization and international linkages. This workshop brings together researchers in international economics who use novel data and methods to address major questions about the global economy.

Keynote Speakers: Paola Conconi (University of Oxford) and Andreas Moxnes (BI Norwegian Business School)
Organizers: Feodora Teti, ifo Institute and Andrew Bernard, Dartmouth College

Green Energy Transition and the Role of Energy in the Macroeconomy

22 - 23 June 2026

Transitioning away from fossil fuels to green energy causes many challenges for energy production and the electric grid. Yet, the sheer cost and required level of innovation as well as the costs of such a restructuring also challenges macroeconomic production and growth. This workshop will bring together economists working on directed technical change, energy modeling, and macroeconomic growth in the context of climate change. We will analyze policies and policy portfolios to steer the transition and foster community building across economic disciplines between researchers working on models of the energy transition, macroeconomists working on technical change and growth, and computational economists offering helpful techniques to model these cross-disciplinary challenges.

Keynote speaker: Catherine Wolfram (MIT)
Organizers: Aleksandra Friedl and Christian Traeger

Workforce Adjustments to Technological Change

22 - 23 June 2026

Technological change is fundamentally reshaping labor markets - transforming job content, skill demands, and organizational structures. This workshop brings together researchers examining how individuals, firms, and institutions (e.g. unions, governments, education systems, and HR practices) adapt to these shifts.

David Autor (MIT) and Anders Humlum (Chicago Booth)
Organizers: Cäcilia vom Baur, ifo Institute and Anna M. Salomons, Utrecht University

The Economics of Children in a Changing World

24 - 25 June 2026

It is now well established that events in childhood, starting from in utero, can have both immediate and lasting impacts on children – and therefore on families and the workforce. Even relatively mild shocks in critical periods can have substantial negative impacts. These effects are heterogeneous, reflecting differences in child endowments, family budget constraints, human capital production technologies, and social safety nets which are not entirely understood. The goal of this workshop is to discuss recent research on children that addresses evolving political and societal challenges around the world.

Keynote: Gabriella Conti (University College London) and Hannes Schwandt (Northwestern University)
Organizers: Joachim Winter, LMU Munich and Janet Currie, Yale University

The Economics of Gender and the Family: Challenges in Past, Present, and Future

24 - 25 June 2026

The past decades have seen an increase in research on gender and families in different areas in economics. This workshop will bring together international experts at the frontier of gender and family economics. Contributions are not limited to gender in the labor market, and we invite submissions dealing with a wide range of gender and family related issues, including work on gaps in labor market outcomes and education, social norms, fertility, family formation, gender violence, and public policies to address these challenges.

Keynote: Matthias Doepke (London School of Economics) and Barbara Petrongolo (University of Oxford)
Organizers: Helmut Rainer, ifo Institute & LMU Munich, Gordon Dahl, UC San Diego, and Pia Heckl, ifo Institute

Managing the State: A New Look at Bureaucrats and Public Administration

24 - 25 June 2026

Public administration is a critical link between policymakers and the public. Given that bureaucrats implement policy decisions, and thus ultimately shape the impact of statutory reforms, public administration quality crucially determines the efficiency of government investments and the effectiveness of the state’s response to policy challenges. Conversely, even a high-quality public administration may be constrained by poor-quality lawmaking. This workshop will discuss recent research on public administration.

Organizers: Nadja Dwenger, University of Hohenheim, Florian Englmaier, LMU Munich, and Anna Gumpert University of Tübingen
